About: This workshop is for people with solid ongoing experience in contact improvisation. As we ground ourselves in the core principles of CI, focusing on the dynamics and subtleties of touch, tone, texture, weight, momentum, and moving support, we will expand our awareness to include space, time, image, gesture and feeling, through solo, duet, trio and ensemble dancing. We will consider how a lightly held compositional awareness and feeling can support our efforts to connect and find meaning when we are dancing. The workshop will involve specific improvisation investigations, perceptual tunings, principles of design and scores aimed at integrating CI within a greater creative universe.
We will seek a quality of attention that shifts from self to other, to the environment and the ever-changing atmospheres in the room and the world at large, and back, to engage with innovative possibilities for individual and collective improvisation. This work can be viewed not only as a means for creative expression but as a process for developing our capacity to collaborate and build a community that holds space for each individual.

> Full workshop registration is available online, via e-transfer or cash at the door.

About: This workshop invites us to honor our essence and become the masters of what we know and what we do. It serves to create containers for focused investigation in compositional improvisation, encouraging each person to engage in the dynamics of self-care and empathy for others. Working with the innate intelligence of the body and a curiosity for the unfolding moment, we behold and are with that which wants to emerge instinctively.
An assortment of engaging and artistic dance scores, images, states, chance procedures, tasks and games, will allow us to play lightly/seriously with our know-how, our how-to-be and our not-knowing. These spontaneous movement structures will help us focus our attention, develop an awareness of inner/outer space, awaken our senses, harness our inventiveness, create familiarity, dive deeply into what is actually happening and stimulate our imagination. Emphasis will be placed upon collaboration and communication, clear intention, trust and intuition.

Frequently asked questions
“What is a difference between a class and a workshop?” A class is a short focused session; and a workshop is a long session (with small breaks at the teacher’s discretion) both are facilitated around the teacher’s interests and knowledge.
“What are Contact Jams?” Contact Improvisation jams are leaderless practice environments in which dancers practice the dance form with whoever gathers—friends or strangers, old, young, experienced, novice. CI jams are loosely structured events for people to gather and practice together (play). The Open Jams do not have a instructor/teacher and do not have instructions; however, EDAM also offer some Jams that might have some instructions.
“I have never done Contact Improvisation (CI). Can I join any classes?” If you have never done CI please sign up to “All levels“ classes first (taught by Olivia Shaffer on Wednesdays and Anne Cooper on Sundays), to acquire some skills and tools. Depending on your skill level you may request to join our most advanced morning classes taught by Peter Bingham. The teachers can support you in this journey. We also facilitate Fundamentals workshops every season - sign up to those!
“Where can I get kneepads for my Contact Improvisation practice? We sell Kneepads for CI practice ($30/ at the door). Ask the teacher/GM for some.“
EDAM respectfully acknowledges that our activities and events take place on the ancestral and unceded Indigenous territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations.
